I was gonna get up an early comic to celebrate this, but things kinda went to shit at work and I didn’t get home til late. Also, that countdown thingy: fucked. I guess I’m going to leave it for now.

Also, I realised last night that I’m kinda pissed off at the time the thing goes live. It’ll be 16:30 for us here in Western Australia meaning that if it does in fact kill us all (which my magic 8-ball assures me it will), it will kill us with half an hour to go until the end of my working day! That’s almost beer o’clock! bastards. If it is gonna kill us all, I’d rather it to happen before I go to work or at least early in the day.

Now I do know that it’ll be likely years before we get any kind of result from the LHC, but the fact that it will be up and running is exciting in itself, but I wonder, would the LHC be getting the same kind of popular following as it is if the USA’s SSC (Superconducting Super Collider) was still on the books?

I wanted to setup one of those internet countdown thingies, but I’ve been held back by one minor problem: I can’t find what time the actual start up is supposed to be*, so I’ll just keep editing the post title I guess.

I was going to call it:

The End-of-the-World,
Microscopic-Black-Hole-of-Death,
Niburu-Worshipping-Mason/Scientist,
Attack-of-the-Killer-Stranglets,
COUNTDOWN CLOCK OF DOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!

And remember: Even if it does kill us all, it’s still really fucking cool!

PS: The odds of that happening are a million to one!**

PPS: But it just might work!

PPS: Just one more LHC wager.

EDIT: Well that doesn’t fucken work. For some reason, the count down only wants to work with java enabled, and if you’ve got it disabled like I’m sure many of you do, it adds 15 hours to the time! What the fuck is with that? If anyone knows how to hack the Countdown Timer so that it work properly, please let me know. I’ll have another look tomorrow, but now, bed.

*Though maybe I could do one that uses psuedo-quantum probabilities instead, like give it a probability range for startup times. Or maybe just say that it’s both Started and Not-Started until you collapse its wave function by actaully observing a confirmed report of it going live.

**It’s a well known fact that million to one chances happen nine times out of ten.
