Journalist inhaling too much Ether?

Posted by Tjin on the 21st November, 2008

There’s this article being posted on various news sites about Einstein’s E=mc^2 finally being proven right.

I’m no scientist. In fact, I haven’t taken a science class since high school*, but this article kinda gives me the shits. Especially the title: “Einstein’s e=mc2 proven after 103 years“. It makes it sound like this was all up in the air until the other day, which is bullshit. The article may be supposed to be positive, in fact the friend who sent me the link is generally not interested in this sort of thing, but it makes it seem like Einstein’s works are still in doubt; like Relativity (General and Special) being a Jewish conspiracy or that a Universal Aether may yet prove Einstein wrong.

From what I understand, Einstein’s mass-to-energy conversions have been confirmed over and over, in the measurement of mass loss from nuclear reactions, chemical reactions etc and the energy releases involved. Actually, the article itself says that it’s only at a sub-atomic scale that this is a new confirmation, but that doesn’t mean that all other observational data and evidence doesn’t count. Even if at those scales Einstein’s predictions were wrong, it wouldn’t have meant that Einstein was. Just as Newton wasn’t wrong because General Relativity was more accurate, an “error” at this scale would have meant a modification of the theory and another step forward for science - especially seeing as we don’t yet have a unification of Relativity and Quantum Mechanics.

Now I can’t get to the paper that it’s reporting on since “Science” requires a paid subscription, so I can’t say what it is actually about, but I suspect that what it actually covers is a helluva lot more (and probably different) than that which the pop-article’s title and content actually implies.

*Therefore, I will he more than happy to be corrected on anything I’ve said here.

The Glass Urchin (comic)

A new(ish) comic I’ve just come across.

It’s cute. And people who know me, know I abhor cute. But there’s a level of charm an execution that’s really attractive and enjoyable. Go see for yourself.

I’ve RSS’d it. You should too.
