I guarantee you this will be one of the rare occasions where my gf actually reads the webcomic.

Pi-ku

Cough.

Ahh, hi.

So… looks like I’m back on the air.

Apologies to those who have been checking back on this site for updates (Surely there can’t be any of you left now, though?). For various reasons it all went by the wayside, but I’ve been missing the internet terribly, and I’m really wanting to get back into it. What exact form this may take, I’m not exactly sure yet, but stay tuned.

But right now, I’ve more important things to discuss.

Haikus are fucking crap.

C’mon, deep down; you know it. We (westerners) all feel so clever and cultured when we use them, but strip that away and what do you got?

Let me answer that in haiku form.

“Haikus aren’t that great
With their arbitrary pace.
Too short to say anyth…

Damn. See what I mean?
Just cultural tourism
With stilted rhythm.”

If we’re going to restrict ourselves to syllabic slavery, why not do it with something that at least has some significance. For instance; write a poem where each line has the same number of syllables as the next digit of pi.

Let me try (taking my return to the internet as a topic).

Been So long.
Soz,
Not too sure why.
But,
I sure done missed it,
Now I’m writing the world’s first Pi-ku.
Wonder
if I make a mistake
- intentional, like -
will you see?
Anyone out there
anal enough to check each line?
What if the only reason I said that
Was just a test for you all?
(For a cheat-sheet, go to the comments).
Anyway
Gotten
A bit stale
But to summarise; Haikus suck.

PS: So if there are any Japanese readers out there super angry that I’ve just trashed your country’s literary traditions; yikes, sorry about that! Gomen nasai! I’m really
more having a dig at westerners who pilfer from foreign cultures to make themselves seem sophisticated.

But hey, I’ll be in Japan soon, so let me make it up to you by allowing you to show me around your country and get me drunk.

Genuinely, though, any Japanese residents willing to show me around please email me; eddie -dot- drury -at- gmail -dot- com.
